Suomen Karate-jutsu Renmei on yksi Kokusai Butokukain jäsenorganisaatioista.
Now that the updated website is finally taking shape, I thought I'd give a short and well overdue presentation of my good friend and senior in the Kokusai Butokukai International, Jean Chalamon, Hanshi 9th Dan.
One of the most senior martial arts teachers in Europe, Jean Sensei began his training with Judo, Karate and Kendo under one of the earliest pioneers of the martial arts in France/Europe, Jim Alchek in 1958 and was strongly influenced by martial artists in France like Hiroo Mochizuki, and Henry Plee. When O'Sensei Kim sent one of his most senior students Richard Lee to France in 1971, Jean became one of his earliest and most accomplished students. When, for various reasons Richard Lee broke away from the Zen Bei Butokukai, there followed a somewhat turbulent period for the group in France, O'Sensei Kim was saddened and somewhat dismayed by events, he asked me just in general what I thought of the situation, I replied that I was certainly not the best informed person to ask and really couldn't say anything more than my personal opinion that "Jean (Chalamon) is a man of honour and integrity", a statement as true today as it was then.
Now O'Sensei of course already knew this and the question of course was to check my understanding of the situation! Jean, with his ability as a martial artist and as a teacher, managed to re-build the Zen Bei Butokukai in France by creating "Arts Martiaux Butokukai France" to unify all french dojos, and later establish Butokukai Europe (France and Finland were later joined by the German, Poland and Spain federations) and lay the foundation for what has now become the Kokusai Butokukai International (Europe).
With his passion and enthusiasm undiminished, Jean continues to direct and strengthen the KBI group throughout Europe. I would like to personally commend Jean for his efforts and pledge our continued support and encouragement in his efforts to preserve and promote O'Sensei Kim's legacy.

I was recently in contact with Major William R. Hayes, USMC (Ret.). Hayes Kyoshi is one of the most senior and certainly one of the most able students of the renowned Okinawan Master Shimabukuro Eizo, Hanshi of Shobayashi Shorin Ryu. Having heard of Hayes Sensei from some of my old training friends, I contacted him some years ago to obtain a copy of his excellent book "My Journey With The Grand Master", (well worth adding to ones' library). Well known for not being well known, Hayes, Kyoshi teaches small groups of dedicated students the traditional arts and ways as he learned them on Okinawa. Hayes Kyoshi's passion is also invested in teaching the martial arts as a holistic lifestyle which includes physical training complemented by a healthy life style and nutritional plan. Regarded by many as one of the most knowledgeable teachers in this field, Hayes Kyoshi occasionally holds seminars for interested groups and has I believe taught in Europe.
Should any of our members be in the States for any extended period for study, work etc, I do strongly recommend that you try to avail yourselves of any opportunity to attend one of his seminars.
On behalf of myself and the Renmei, I would like to wish Hayes Kyoshi, every success in his endeavours.

The Society is a growing group of "Student-Teachers" committed to life-long study, meaningful skill development, and personal wellness. Further, we are dedicated to the presumptuous tasks of researching, preserving, and passing on the old .Life Protection. models inherent within the classical kata of Okinawa.s martial arts traditions - with emphasis on the Shorin style.
Our principle goals are to honor the accomplishments of some of Okinawa's great masters - past and present, and to perhaps expand the possibilities of those we come in contact with.
Membership is open to serious practitioners, irrespective or rank or affiliation. (Those who are not serious are encouraged to fill out the tiny ads appearing in the rear of some of our Nation's more notorious martial arts magazines.)
The Society is directed by Bill Hayes, Major, USMC (Ret.), an "old student" of Shorin-ryu karate (since 1960), and a direct student of Eizo Shimabukuro, Hanshi, 10th Dan.
If interested, please contact the Renmei for further details.
